Make A Change

You may start by doing something small. What do you have to give with? Time, material, knowledge. Who do you want to help? Could you be merely looking to massage your own ego? Be careful there. Would throwing a lavish party for a bunch of disadvantaged folks be that beneficial? Are you familiar with the concept of over-compensation? In helping effectively, we need to understand the wisdom behind it. Are we willing to be inconvenienced when we give others’ help? Does helping another always have to be fun? You may start by helping with simple things that could still be fun, but do not overdo with something you lack the commitment and ability to upkeep. It would not be good help if you introduced an upper-class lifestyle to another who has trouble with a hungry stomach or a decent shelter, if you are not able to change their lives completely.

Avoid giving materially, that is actually the easiest form of helping. Look at poor rich children who lacks the parents’ attention, all they get is material things. If you want to give materially, start by looking at your recipients living conditions, what is lacking in their daily lives and what could they be struggling with that could do with your help.

If you see a sick and hungry stray animal, it would not make any sense of give it a big turkey that would last a meal. It might be more practical to spread out the cost to bring the animal to be cleaned and treated medically, give shelter or feed it with simple nutritional food for a longer term basis.

If you want to help a underprivileged or disadvantaged child, it would be impractical to shower the child with toys and fun times if his/her daily conditions leave us lots of room to improve. It might be wiser to improve his/her living conditions, reach the child how to read and instill values of education so you may teach the child to fish, instead of just giving fish.

If you want to help a poor beggar, it would be wise to know what he/she needs most. Sometimes it is shelter, sometimes it is food, sometimes it is a fresh change of clothes or a bath. Giving money could be impractical because he/she might use it for unwholesome activities such as to feed an addiction that they cannot afford.

If you want to help an old person who is living in a shelter, it might be most effective to bring comfort by having a caring chat, giving a massage to ease a body pain, grooming and if possible bring a person who would put laughter back in his/her life. Often these folks do not get to see their own kin so frequently and may be hurting from it. A lavish party would not do.

How about a little insect? Is it worthy of your help? Perhaps by suppressing the urge to kill it, is the greatest act of compassion. If a snail was lost, you could bring it back to its’ natural habitat. If an ant was in your way, you could use a paper and take it to an outdoor spot where it would disturb nobody. If you lack talent in rearing fish, do not own an aquarium.

How else can you help?

What about giving your time? It is the most important commodity. People often throw money to help because they are not able to give their time. Our challenge is to give time and spend those time in the most effective manner possible. We may also help by using our resources, knowledge, skills, influence and et cetera. Sometimes if you can help by making an introduction to the right person who can help, and getting the person interested to help. You could use your skills in troubleshooting to solve some daily issues for someone lacking the knowledge. You could help by writing letters, making phone calls, providing transport or shelter, repairing things, coaching someone how to do something useful, suggesting improvements and giving aid to achieve them, helping clean, drawing out structure if there was chaos, supplying a steady supply of rice/sugar/flour, taking care of monthly utility bills… et cetera.

To be honest, if we really wanted to help, there are multitudes of avenues to help without the talk of money or materialistic means. We do what we can, it boils down to how much effort we want to put in. Look first into the the basic and practical needs of the recipient and be mindful to help with a simple motivation to improve another life.

Helping Angels do not have any tax exemption activities. We do not welcome politicking, commercial marketing or religious evangelism. There are no fund raising activities, neither do we handle any type of donation. We only help by pointing you in the right direction towards undiscovered corner of society that is in need of some basic practical help.

If you are not able to give time, please browse into our classifieds to see who needs what, and go directly to help. We do not play any middle-men roles.

Who else needs help?

Sometimes people who need help does not even know it or are too proud to admit it. We could look within and see some aspects of ourselves that we are defensive about receiving help. Our pride tend to get in the way of improvements. We could help ourselves by overcoming the ugly pride and adopt humility in learning. That is probably the best way to bring positivity into our own life, by changing ourselves without expecting others to change.

We always should start our charities at home. Start being a helping angel by sorting out your family issues for instance. You could help by being filial to your elders and dutiful to the young. Sometimes unresolved matters at home can be most difficult indeed. It is probably best to start there despite the urge to sweep them under the carpet. If you refuse to tackle your personal matters when you could, and consume all your time into helping outside matters, you are merely indulging in a form of escapism. Sometimes it might be useful to put in the effort at home and then you will be more effective outside in any avenue of help that you may want to offer others. You may opt to do both simultaneously, by starting your charity at home as well as outside.

Practice generosity towards your family, friends, colleagues, acquaintances and strangers. It can start with a simple smile or a sincere compliment. With animals, it could be a conscious choice not to kill it or eat it while it is still alive.

We could also help by conserving the environment. Reduce, reuse and recycle. Be learned about environmental issues and install a sustainable lifestyle that will not increase the usage of plastics or unnecessary energy.

Samuel L. Jackson and Marvel Ent. have come to a deal for the actor to play Nick Fury in IRON MAN 2 and up to nine more future Marvel superhero releases, reports VARIETY.

Marvel reportedly upset Jackson when he was offered pittance to reprise his role in future films, which has also been the root of problems in offers to talent like Mickey Rourke and Sam Rockwell, according to sources, despite a gross of upwards of $600 million for IRON MAN.

Fury is the leader of Shield, an espionage unit that in the Marvel universe has him crossing paths with many of the superheroes. Jackson will likely now appear in CAPTAIN AMERICA, THOR, THE AVENGERS and THE SHIELD as well as any sequels. Jackson was introduced to the world as Fury during the closing moments of last summer's IRON MAN, when he asks Robert Downey Jr.'s Tony Stark to join the group.

Imagi Gets Money to Complete Astro Boy, Restructures

Asian-based CG-animated movie studio Imagi International Holdings will have enough money to complete feature film project ASTRO BOY. The company raised about $25 million to finish the film and will release it on time on October 23, 2009.

Imagi will still have to raise additional financing to ramp up production of films currently scheduled for release in 2010 and 2011 before box office receipts come in for ASTRO BOY.

DAILY VARIETY reports that all but 23 of its California-based staffers have been called back to work. In January, about 100 of Imagi's 120 workers (mostly in Sherman Oaks) were furloughed.

Imagi also announced Wednesday it has adopted a comprehensive financing plan to provide the operating capital needed to complete ASTRO BOY, and to provide the company with a solid financial foundation for future growth. The financing plan includes the raising of substantial capital from new and existing investors, the appointment of a financial advisor, the replacement of convertible debt with equity, and the acquisition of bridging loans to stabilize operations in the near term.

Imagi has appointed Anglo Chinese Corporate Finance as its financial advisor. Anglo Chinese will undertake a comprehensive review of the company's financial requirements, business prospects, and financing options. It is anticipated that Anglo Chinese will then assist the company in structuring and implementing a fundraising exercise that may include, but would not be limited to, a rights offering. An announcement will be made by the company when the terms of the fund raising exercise are available in accordance with the Listing Rules.

Imagi has obtained proposals for up to $16.6 million of bridge debt, of which approximately one third has been drawn down. It believes that the bridge funding is sufficient to sustain its operations through completion of its next substantial capital raising. Should additional bridge financing be required, the company is confident based upon assurances from current bridge lenders that such funds will be available. Some or all of the bridge debt could convert to equity, subject to agreement upon terms of subscription agreements and in some cases shareholder approvals.

In addition to stabilizing current operations, the proceeds of the bridge funding have been applied to past due payables, including deferred payroll and vendor invoices. As a result, Imagi has avoided material disruptions in the production and marketing of its film ASTRO BOY, and has been able to sustain development of longer term film projects, namely the announced GATCHAMAN and TUSKER films.

As part of the overall plan to strengthen and restructure Imagi's balance sheet, the company has initiated discussions with Winnington Capital relative to the exchange of its HK$132 million Convertible Note into equity. It is anticipated that completion of Imagi's contemplated financings would trigger an early redemption provision of the Winnington convertible note, and thus it would be in the interest of the company and its shareholders to exchange the debt for share equity. Should the Company and Winnington Capital enter into a definitive agreement in this regard, the consent of independent shareholders may be required.

To this end, Imagi has appointed four new directors to its board. Paul Steven Serfaty, Phoon Chiong Kit and William Montgomerie Courtauld have been appointed non-executive directors. Richard Arthur Witts has been appointed independent non-executive director and Chairman. Witts has also been appointed a member of the audit and remuneration committee. Douglas Glen, CEO and executive director, has been appointed to the remuneration committee. Ng See Yuen and Oh Kok Chi remain as independent non-executive directors, and Oh remains a member of the audit committee.

Additionally, Francis Kao has resigned as chairman and executive director in order to devote more time to his role as the chief creative officer of the company. Kao founded the company in 2000.

For the first time ever in South East Asia, Singapore will celebrate the diversity of Japanese Pop Culture.

Taking place on the 22nd and 23rd of November 2008 (Saturday and Sunday) at the Suntec International Convention and Exhibition Center, Anime Festival Asia 2008 (AFA08) will showcase a wide array of Japanese Pop Culture related content, spanning over 5,000 sqm of space with 6 experience zones: Akiba Town, Anime Live, Anime Blockbusters, Industry, Mangaka and Planet Mech, where visitors will gain access to exclusive content, merchandise and live acts straight from Japan.

The festival targets children, youth, adults and industry visitors both locally and from around the region – with an expected turnout in excess of 80,000 visitors.

Anime Festival Asia 2008 (AFA08) is organized by I-Promo Events & Marketing in partnership with Dentsu Singapore. AFA08 is sponsored by Bandai, Japan’s leading toy manufacturer, with Animax as the official regional media partner.

The festival, made possible with support from the Embassy of Japan and the Japan Foundation, will be attended by directors, producers, manga artists and creative individuals from Japan’s entertainment industries.

The festival is a pre-event introduction for the Japan Creative Centre that is scheduled to open next year in Singapore. The Japan Creative Centre’s primary objective is to be a platform for showcasing Japanese-related content and culture in Singapore.

As interest in the Japanese anime industry increases throughout the world, this trade fair provides businesses and companies in South East Asia an opportunity to preview the latest anime content from Japan.

“Anime Festival Asia will be an exciting experience for everyone in the family! There is a program-packed line-up at “Anime Live”, where activities on stage will include an exclusive premiere of an anime short from “Genius Party Beyond”, the latest anime feature movie from Studio 4¡C. AFA08 will also have character appearances, music performances and competitions of all kinds related to the anime industry. There will also be live talk shows where anime enthusiasts can meet the creators of their favourite anime. Manga fans will also have a chance to enter the world of the artist with a display of never before seen sketch arts in the “Mangaka” zone. “Planet Mech” will appeal to robot fans who can get up close and personal with a Gundam Seed Destiny diorama display; and the list goes on,” said Anthony Kang, Chairman, Dentsu Singapore and Chairman of AFA08.

“With Japanese Popular Culture in South East Asia currently undergoing tremendous growth in popularity, there is definitely a need for a global platform like Anime Festival Asia to showcase Anime related content in this region, much like the ‘Tokyo Anime Fair in Japan, and the ‘Anime Expo’ in the US. We will showcase exclusive footage, artifacts and creative scene materials such as storyboards, character and prop designs at ‘Anime Blockbusters” where fans can go ‘behind the scenes’, ” said Richard Tan, Executive Director of I-Promo Events & Marketing and Festival Director of AFA08. “We also have an ‘Industry’ zone to provide youths who are considering a career in the anime industry a chance to find out more about their opportunities, and there will be a business track for companies in the industry to learn more about content development and distribution,” added Tan.

Favourite anime characters from Bandai, like the Power Rangers, will join new characters from the “Tamagotchi” family for meet and greet sessions and “live” stage shows to entertain the families visiting the festival,” said Wong Kah Fai,Deputy General Manager, Bandai South Asia.
